Start Small
If your habit is to take a walk every day, you’re not going to start with 5 miles! If you have a big goal, you need to break your goal down into increments. For example, if you want to walk for 30 minutes without getting out of breath, start walking for 5 or 10 minutes first and build on that. If you try to do too much too quickly, you might feel discouraged. Have patience, start small, and build on your progress.
Know Your Excuses
What gets in the way of this habit? Is it because you’re tired? Or do you run out of time and get too busy during the day? Whatever habit you want to start, consider what is preventing your success. Then, once you nail down your obstacles, you can address them.
Enable Your New Habits
You can set yourself up for success. If you do not go to the gym because you need to remember your gym clothes, start packing them the night before. If you need to remember to pack your lunch, pack it the night before. Need more time to go to the gym? Schedule a time and treat it like an appointment. Enable your habits by addressing your obstacles and preparing for success.
Don’t Sweat Failure
Everyone fails, and at some point, you will, too, and that is just fine. So whether you cheat on a diet or skip a workout, don’t get discouraged or think you’ve failed! Just get back in the saddle tomorrow. Success is often about not giving up despite setbacks, so do not lose heart when you experience a setback - keep working.
Keep Track
What gets measured gets managed. Measuring your progress also helps keep you motivated as you work towards your goal.
